Creating Art when you are Disabled

image.jpg

So a lot of you may not know this but I create art with a slight disadvantage! I am blind in my left eye, not only that I have 25% vision in my right eye and no peripheral vision.    So let me tell you how I got this way. Well when I was twelve I had a brain tumor the size of a golf ball growing behind my left eye.  I was super lucky and blessed that it was not cancerous  and that there were really no complications. Yes I lost a lot of my vision, I also lost my pituitary gland and some other random things lol. I also stopped growing so this thirty something girl you look at today still has the same body she had when she was twelve! Crazy I know, what I also know is that I think differently, process things differently and just have a different outlook on things, but then again don't we all?

image.jpg

I have tried really hard to not let my lack of vision get in the way of what I want, now there are certain things I definetly shouldn't do like drive a car or operate heavy machinery! I think making art became an outlet for me because it was so easy and natural for me even though drawing things with perspective and shadow and light did not and still do not come easy! I discovered art in junior high (I started 7th grade bald and gained about 60 pounds due to surgery) and let me tell you I NEEDED it like really needed it! Art became and still is like a best friend and I rarely think about the fact I am only seeing a limited range of what I am making at a time.

image.jpg

So what I really want to say to you is no matter what your disability is you can make something beautiful. You can find a way to make it work and find a special way to express yourself. Art doesn't judge us for our disadvantages so just get out there pick up that paintbrush and make something, anything because I know you have it in you to put beautiful things out into this world!

Art Journal Everyday

Hey friends! So at the beginning of February I decided to challenge myself with doing at least fifteen minutes of art journaling daily. Let me just say that I am so so loving it! I find myself trying new things and experimenting on a daily basis! I often find that my fifteen minutes soon turns to thirty but I am just as happy on days when I just get the fifteen minutes in! Here is what I have created so far!

Summer Frame DIY

Hi friends! Hope you are all having a fabulous day I know I am! I just wanted to share a little project with you that I whipped up the other day! It's super fun and simple and will look fantabulous in anyone's home!
I had this cute frame I bought from Michael's ages ago and finally decided to put it to use! The first thing I did was paint it teal (a favorite color in our house!) I then found some cute Jar stamps and found some of my favorite paper!

I stamped all the papers with my cute Mason Jar stamp also found at Michael's! I cut all 12 of the jars and and simply stung them with some yellow twine! I added some cute letters and a few flowers and voila! So simple and easy and the best part is that I can take the jars off and put a new banner up there at any time!
Well I hope you enjoyed my little project! Are you making anything fun for the summer? Feel free to share below! Have a great day friends!

Altered Clipboard

Hi there! Hope you are having a great day! I am here to share just a fun little tutorial! You can do this project in less than an hour and it is super cute!

I found this cute burlap clipboard at Michael's its made by Tim Holtz and comes with lots of fun embellishments BUT they weren't really my style so I went ahead and made it my own!

I started with the blank burlap clipboard and used this awesome Heidi Swapp stencil with white spray ink!

I also painted the actual clip a metallic black, added some hot pink around the edges and a bit here and there. I used my black stamp pad to add some black around the edge of the clipboard!

I added an inked up flower, some feathers and gems and voila done! I love how it turned out! Well I hope you enjoyed my little project have a great day and happy arting friends!

Canvas Heart Tutorial

Hi friends! I hope you are having a great day! Today I am sharing a fun little tutorial on how to make this cute heart canvas! Its super fun and easy and will bring a little sparkle to wherever you decide to hang it! Lets get started!

Start out by cutting out a heart shape from your canvas fabric

I then completley  gessoed over the entire heart to stiffen the fabric some and to give me a nice white clean surface

I used some black ink and splattered some accrossed the heart I then added some stamped words to add some extra flare

I used this great flower stencil all over the heart I used my hot pink fluid acrylics mixed with both texture paste and modeling paste so that it was super thick and textured when dry
I used my hot glue gun to add some pretty flowers a gold frame and a pretty gold key! It was super fun and easy to make and I am a bit addicted I have two more in the works as we speak! I hope you enjoyed my little tutorial happy creating friends!

Mixed Media Fabric Cuff Bracelet

Hello friends! Today I am here with a super easy and fun tutorial! Its a fun fabric cuff that you can put together in less than fifteen minutes! So easy and super cute in no time at all! Let's get started!

Here's what you'll need:
Fabric
Empty Tape Roll
Ribbon
Hot Glue
Pendant

So I have been a bit of a hoarder and have been saving these empty duct tape rolls AND my hand painted fabric for forever! Well I decided it was time to put them to good use!

Start but cutting a strip of your fabric about an inch to an inch and a half wide

Grab your tape roll and start on the inside with a bit of hot glue

Start wrapping the cuff, only gluing every other strip on the inside of the cuff

Grab some ribbon and glue around the cuff, leaving a bit of a tail, tie in a knot, adding a dot of glue to the center of knot so it stays together. Trim and fray check your ribbon.

Add your pendant with some glue and you are done! Super simple!

Mini Canvas Tutorial

Hi lovelies how are you? I am here to share a fun little project you could get done in an afternoon! It's super fun and doesn't cost much either! Making mini canvases can have a ton of possibilities! I got this pack of six 4x4 canvases at Michael's for just under four dollars and if you bring in a forty percent off coupon its even cheaper! Well lets get started!

 1. The first thing I did was tape my canvases together so that I could work on the back ground all together to make it a bit easier and faster.
 2. Glue down some riped up book pages
3. I added a bunch of gesso with a pallet knife and then smashed the canvas together to get some fun texture going
 4. Use a paper towel (yes a paper towel) to spread random colors of paint on all the canvases
Using the paper towels give you a soft wispy effect that I am in LOVE with!
5. I then continued with all of my favorite colors!
 6. Add some purple spray through a stencil to add some interest
 7. I then broke the canvases apart and added some neon oil pastels around the edge of all of the canvases
8. Use some stamps on the back ground and then made hearts with some modeling paste
 9. I painted over all of the modeling paste with fun neon colors
10.  Use sequins on the hearts for some fun 3D elements and add a fun doodle border and that's it your done! Super simple right?

I hope you all enjoyed my mini canvas tutorial please feel free to post a link if you try this out for yourself! I would love to see what wonderful things you come up with!

Hello 2015!

Hi friends! Hope everyone had a great Holiday season I know I did! I spent two weeks in California with family and had a blast! Things here are finally settling down so I thought I would do a quick recap of the last few months before getting all the fun things for 2015 going!

Celebrated New Years in San Diego

Taught my first in person class!
Tried new things and challenged myself!

Lot's of fun art added in there! One of my biggest goals for 2015 is to journal more and blog more! What are your plans for 2015? How has your January been so far? Talk to you soon friends!

Gelli Print Pillow Box

Hi friends! I hope you all are having a great day and a happy holiday season! Today I am bringing you a super simple (but super cute) tutorial on how to make a pillow box for little gifts and treats! Lets get started!

Things you will need:
An empty toilet paper roll (or paper towel roll cut in half)
Gesso or white paint
Paint of your choosing
Gelli Arts Gel Plate
Stencils
Brayer
Fun things like ribbons and anything else you might want to decorate your box with!

I started out by sanding off as much of the left over tissue and then applied two coats of gesso

Now starts the fun! I got out my Gelli Arts gel printing plate and used hot pink first

Next I decided to do some fun green polka dots!

Then I added some teal, after the teal I added a coat of Pearl glazing medium just to add a bit of shimmer!

Fold the two ends into each other and your ready to decorate!
I added a doily, some seam binding and tulle to tie it all together and thats it! Super simple and now you have a cute box to give a small gift in! You would never even guess it was a toilet paper roll! Well I hope you all enjoyed my tutorial have a great day friends!

Fun with Acrylic Skins

So I have been reading up on Acrylic skins and I have really been wanting to try it out so I thought I would document my little experiment and share it with you! (Let me just say I have made two more of these! Its a bit addicting!) Alright lets get started

Things you need

  • a Transparency (I used a 12x12 sheet protector)
  • Acrylic Paint (I used my high flow acrylics by Golden)
  • Liquitex Glazing Medium
  • Any other fun things you can throw in there! (glitter, puffy paint stamps maybe?)

First spread out some of the glazing medium onto your surface (whether it be a transparency etc.) Don't worry about it being perfectly even it will settle overnight!

Now add drops of color into your glazing medium! Keep going til its just about full of color! I then just swirled some of the paint together with a toothpick! Then let it dry overnight!

After it dries overnight it will be clear, I let mine dry two days just to be safe but that's all up to you! It will pull up really easily and feel almost like a taffy so be careful it will stick together!

I used some black puffy paint to write all over mine and  then cut a heart out of it and put it in my journal! I love that its transparent! So many possibilities! Let me know if you try it out and I will see you soon! Happy Arting!

Art Journal Love

Hi friends I know its been awhile but I figured I would stop by for an update and share some art journal love! I am finding my love of color just continues to grow, I love using my neon paints and contrasting them with a darker purple or blue! I also love adding pops of black, I love how back + neon looks!

I am also in love with drippy circles! I find myself filling my pages with them! Do you have any shapes that are always popping up on your pages? I also really love adding text to my pages whether it be stamps or some paper collage!

Maps continue to be one of the things I always reach for when I need paper! I love the colors, the lines and the text! What do you tend to reach for? That's all for me now, I hope you have a wonderful Monday!

Why I Art Journal

Hi there, I know it's been yet another month but well here I am again! This past weekend I had a small meetup with a few other crafty ladies at my house. Both of which were scrapbookers and had never really heard of art journaling, I showed them my journals and watched as they flipped through the pages. They asked how I got started and then one of them asked me why I art journal. Well it got me thinking why do I art journal? I have a few answers first I said simply because I love it I love taking paper and paint and making something beautiful.

When I first started art journaling, I needed it, like really needed that outlet to gush all of my thoughts out on a page and then to cover them with paint. So why has that changed so much over the past four years? Now a days I write one word or a few little things that are running through my head. There are days when I pick up my journal turn to a blank page and find myself writing, but per usual it gets covered.  I guess I have changed and my need for art journaling has changed.

I art journal because it soothes ans awakens me, it sets me free, it lets me be messy and be a bit of a mad scientist. I love it so, my journals and the pages that fill them are a peek into my soul. So ask yourself why do you art journal? You never know what answer you might come up with.

Long time no see...

Hi friends, how are you? Well October was a really busy month for me, a trip to California and of course lots of Halloween fun! I took a fun class with Tangie Baxter, and when I finish the little journal I will share that with you! Right now I am just working on getting a little painting in each day, it is art every day month and so far I have painted all four days, go me! Even if its just some collage or a background, its something, its a start. Here are some close ups of my pages! Have a great day and see you tomorrow for Glue it Tuesday!

Saying thank you

Normally I would post a tutorial today but I kind of felt like doing some writing so here is goes. I am so so thankful for the amazing things happening in my life right now, it's so important to stop and give gratitude when the universe gives you the things you have been working and hoping for. I recently found out that I have been granted disability/social security. We have been struggling with this for about two years now and I am so thankful that things have finally come around. You see just going to work and doing the things most people do daily can be difficult sometimes, I am legally blind in my left eye and have only 25% vision in my right, I had a brain tumor when I was 12 and do to that and the years following that, I became really socially awkward and am just now coming out of that (even though it shows up at the worst times) I could go on listing my health problems but I wont, I just needed to say thank you. Thank you for the recognition I have been receiving for the art I love making, for my family being in this amazing happy place right now, for the new friendships I am making and for my readers even if you just randomly stumbled across my page today for the first time. Thanks for reading my ramblings, have a happy Friday!

Glue it Tuesday

Hi there! Hope everyone is having a great Tuesday! I am just here with a quick page I did this morning for Glue it Tuesday! I really love doing these pages they are so fun and spontaneous! I love the cute little tape sticker that Tangie Baxter gave me at her studio opening on Saturday! Also please sign up for my newsletter, I will be hoping to at least get them out twice a month, they will have lots of fun artsy goodness, so sign up and stayed tuned!  Well that is all for me I will be back soon to share some fun pages with you!
